Shamus' Story

Shamus, our second child, graced us with his presence for 11 years, three months, and two days. He was diagnosed with Leukemia at age seven, which he bravely fought for four years. After receiving a stem cell transplant, Shamus caught two different types of pneumonia which, due to his compromised immune system, ultimately took his life.

Shamus was a bright, energetic, well-mannered, loving, funny, giving, and adventurous young man. He had beautiful blue eyes and a smile that would light up a room. He loved telling jokes and always thought of others before himself. While receiving treatment, Shamus would often suggest to the nurses that they should tend to others before him. If he saw that you looked worried about him, he would try and ease your concerns.

Shamus was brave well beyond his years. We witnessed him receive treatment and experience side effects from medicines that would bring a strong adult to their knees, but he took it in stride without flinching. He carried the weight of the world on his shoulders and never stumbled or faltered. Shamus was truly a heaven-sent angel on earth.

About the Foundation

The Shamus Ward Foundation was founded in 2010 as a way to remember Shamus and to enable us to help the families we watched suffer alongside ours. The Foundation is a recognized 501(c)(3) charity, which raises funds to help victims of Childhood Cancers and support research to find a cure. We currently divide the funds received between research and patient-related causes.

The Foundation is family-run along with the help of many volunteers. This allows the Foundation to maximize its impact to help others and find a cure. Recently, the Foundation has provided support to Memorial Sloane-Kettering, Make-a-Wish Foundation, and the Leukemia and Lymphoma Foundation.

We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to our family, friends, and supporters who help us remember Shamus and assist others in need.

Thank you,

The Ward Family
